In today’s market, there are a lot of stacks that have so-called “testosterone boosters” that barely have any research on them. Some of these have even proven to be detrimental to male health while some are basically libido or muscle enhancers that give you the feeling of having boosted testosterone.
That being said, D-Aspartic Acid (DAA) is not one of these bogus T boosters. If you want to straight-up boost testosterone, this sh*t is for real. In this review, I’ll show you actual research that backs the use of D-Aspartic Acid as a powerful and natural testosterone booster but before that, here are a few of my favorite supplements who have DAA at the core of their formulas.
WHY TEST BOOSTER SUPPLEMENTS USE D-ASPARTIC ACID
Discovered in 1872, D-Aspartic Acid is a relatively new comer to the world of natural testosterone boosting. However, it has already shown so much more potential than most others that came before it. In fact, one clinical research on D-Aspartic Acid has shown that it can boost testosterone by as much as 42% in just 12 days. FYI, that’s a lot of boost in a short amount of time.
I’d love to talk about how awesome D-Aspartic Acid is but I’ll save that for the research part of this article. For now, allow me to give you a little overview.
Aspartic Acid (or Aspartate as it is sometimes called) is an amino acid and like other amino acids, it is used in the biosynthesis of proteins. It can be naturally produced by our bodies and can be found in large concentrations in the testes, brain (hypothalamus), and the pituitary gland. Mind you, all these areas are involved in the system that regulates hormones (endocrine system).
Indeed, there is a link between hormones in general and D-Aspartic Acid. Since it’s a fairly new supplement, however, it is to be expected that more research needs to be done to explore the full capacities of this manly amino acid. On both rat and human researches that it currently has though, I have to admit I am deeply impressed.
STUDIES ON D-ASPARTIC ACID SUGGEST:
Regulate sex hormones
Speaking of rat and human studies, this first research is a pretty cool one because it’s a study using a combination of both species. The goal of this research was to investigate the effect of D-Aspartic Acid on the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone.
The human subjects supplemented with DADAVIT® or a placebo while the rats drank a solution of either 20 mM D-aspartate or a placebo. The supplementation lasted for 12 days for both species. As with any experiment, appropriate parameters were measured and analyzed. Below are the results:
- In rats:
- increased the synthesis and release of LH in the pituitary
- increased the synthesis and release of testosterone in testis’ Leydig cells
- In humans:
- significantly increased LH concentrations in the blood (33.3%)
- significantly increased testosterone in serum (42%)
To us humans specifically, D-Aspartic Acid seems to be a very powerful supplement for boosting masculine hormones such as LH and testosterone. If the results of the rat study translate to the human body, it can be said that D-Aspartic Acid might be involved in multiple areas of testosterone production such as the pituitary and the Leydig cells which I think is super awesome.
But wait! Sex hormones aren’t limited to men’s hormones such as LH and testosterone. There’s also female sex hormones which D-Aspartic Acid also seems to be involved in. Needless to say, this is not cool.
This other rat research demonstrated similar results where D-Aspartic Acid influenced testosterone and LH via the pituitary and the testis. However, DAA has also shown to significantly increase the female hormone progesterone.
Furthermore, another research has demonstrated that D-Aspartic Acid also significantly increased aromatase activity in the Leydig cells which eventually led to higher levels of estriadol (another potent female hormone).
Stimulate multiple endocrine pathways
This next research, to me, is actually supplementary to the previous researchers. It doesn’t involve experimentation but instead, explains the potential endocrine pathways that involves D-Aspartic Acid.
From the previous researches, we’ve already established that D-Aspartic Acid stimulates LH from the pituitary and testosterone from the testes. To supplement this data, this current research says that D-Aspartic Acid also increases growth hormone and prolactin in the pituitary gland while increasing progesterone in the testes.
According to the research, there’s an additional area where D-Aspartic Acid works its magic. In the hypothalamus, D-Aspartic Acid enhances the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) which in turn, generates oxytocin and mRNA synthesis.
From there, the writers of the study established a hypothalamus–pituitary–gonadal pathway which involves D-Aspartic Acid.
Improve sperm quality and quantity
This last research investigated the impact of sodium D-Aspartate on sperm. Take note though, that the men who were the subjects of the study were “sub-fertile” and were either diagnosed with oligoasthenozoospermia (reduced sperm count and motility) or asthenozoospermia (reduced sperm motility).
These men were instructed to take sodium D-aspartate daily for 90 days. After the 90 day supplementation, sperm concentration and motility was measured in addition to the rate of pregnancies that happened with their respective partners. These are the results:
- Sperm concentration
- oligoasthenozoospermia – increased two fold
- asthenozoospermia – increased 1.6 fold
- Sperm motility
- oligoasthenozoospermia – improved from 15.5% to 23.1%
- asthenozoospermia – improved from 11.6% to 21.6%
- Increased number of pregnant partners for both groups
Clearly, the results of this research showed an improvement in both sperm quality and quantity from D-Aspartic Acid supplementation.
How Do I Take D-ASPARTIC ACID?
Since research is still early, there also isn’t an established dose for D-Aspartic Acid to work for male health. From the researches I’ve referenced to however, the lowest dose where it seemed to be effective was at 2.66 g where it showed to improve sperm.
I’ve also noticed that a lot of the more powerful testosterone boosters use upwards of 3 g and personally, I support this because this dose is also what’s shown to significantly boost testosterone.
When it comes to form, the researches here use plain, sodium bound D-Aspartic Acid and obviously, it’s already shown a lot of potential. In truth, however, our bodies have a hard time absorbing this form which is probably what leads to its reported gastric side effects. Moreover, some supplements also use a lot of additives in their capsules or powder and this, too, can cause irritation.
D-Aspartic Acid bound to chelated calcium (D-AA-CC) is better absorbed by our bodies which then means lesser instances of side effects and lesser required dose. In this case, somewhere around 1000-2000 mg should be enough.

The scientific evidence on D-Aspartic Acid, although at its early stages, has already shown so much promise. I mean, a 42% raise in testosterone in just 12 days?? That’s insanely good! I personally haven’t seen any natural testosterone booster do this much in such a short amount of time and it does so through multiple endocrine pathways, too!
To top it off, it also has benefits on male fertility by improving sperm concentration and motility. This is particularly good for men having difficulties getting their partners pregnant but for playboy bachelors who just want sex and not the responsibilities of having kids, a leaky and potent dick might pose a threat.
All kidding aside though, D-Aspartic Acid looks really, really good for male health. The only real problem I see here is how DAA also increases female hormones like estriadol, prolactin, and progesterone. BUT! If you find yourself a smartly formulated stack with ingredients that block these said hormones (such as Boron, Stinging Nettle, and Luteolin among others), there really isn’t much to worry about.
