As you will discover surfing around this site, when you begin to look for the best testosterone boosters on the market, there are a wide range of ingredients to choose from.
Some are effective, others are less than ideal. Some may sound like they would be a great idea, but won’t produce much more than a placebo effect. Some others might be included in testosterone stacks even though they do nothing for T.

They can be taken as standalone supplements, but the real magic happens when you stack certain ingredients together: Some of them actually work better as a team.
In my opinion, the synergy that happens when the right T-booster ingredients are combined together might actually be the secret to the results you want: Raising the body’s production of testosterone, and sustaining its time circulating in the bloodstream, naturally.
Let’s look at some of the most common ingredients found in testosterone boosters, what they are supposed to do, some tips on how to take them, and whether they might actually work.
List of T-Booster Ingredients
Anacylus Pyrethrum – used as an aphrodisiac in certain cultures, it has been found to be effective in boosting testosterone in laboratory mice, though no tests have been conducted on humans yet. Verdict: potentially positive.
Boron – this mineral is claimed to help produce more testosterone in the body. Some research has shown that it seems to work pretty fast, increasing testosterone in men in as little as one week. Boron also seems to amplify the effects of vitamin D and magnesium, so it is a T-booster that boosts other T-boosters. Many men don’t get enough, so you want it in your stack. Verdict: positive.
Cordyceps – it is actually a fungus that lives on moth larvae. Not very appealing, but there is some interesting animal research showing that this weird fungus increases testosterone levels in mice. Verdict: shows potential.
Top T-Booster Pick: D-Aspartic Acid (DAA)
Also called DAA, this amino acid is a balls-out sex hormone supercharger that directly promotes T production in men. It is my favorite T-booster ingredient, which you probably know if you’ve read my reviews. The hottest research on DAA shows a 42% increase in testosterone in under 2 weeks, and a special form called D-AA-CC is even stronger (my top-rated T-booster stack is the only one I’ve seen that uses the super-potent D-AA-CC form). Verdict: very positive.
Holy Basil – is considered to be an enhancer for libido. It may produce important nutrients that are responsible for overcoming infertility. Verdict: not essential for testosterone production.
Horny Goat Weed – used in some cultures to help decrease erectile dysfunction, there are no current studies in Western science to support claims that it increases testosterone production. It still shows up in T-booster stacks because it WILL make you feel manly as eff, even if it is not raising T. Verdict: average.
Maca – this is a vegetable that is part of the broccoli family grown in Peru. It has long been used as an aphrodisiac, though it doesn’t work with other hormones. Verdict: Average.
Top T-Booster Pick: Mucuna Pruriens (Velvet Bean)
This is some exotic test-boosting mojo right here: Mucuna works for testosterone because it blocks some girly hormones while boosting test “helpers.” It seems especially good for men with virility problems — one study found it boosted T by 39 percent in men with low sperm count. It is an awesome ingredient for test stacks, but be sure you buy it standardized because it is more safe. Verdict: very positive.
Longjack – also known as tongkat ali, this root herb is most famous as an off-the-charts sex drive enhancer. It also helps with stress responses and has been shown in some research to significantly raise testosterone in men. It is just awesome for overall manliness, and good to take as a standalone supplement or in male performance products Verdict: very positive.
Fenugreek – This seed-herb is freakin’ legendary as a physical performance booster that also helps with male sex drive. Abundant research suggests it has a role in supporting healthy testosterone levels. The one drawback is that it seems to drive down DHT, which is another masculine hormone that has testosterone-like effects. Verdict: just OK.
King Oyster Mushroom – this is actually a mushroom that contains bioactive nutrition that contributes a little the production of certain hormones in the body. Verdict: just OK.
Top T-Booster Pick: Oysters
I think oysters are disgusting as food, but they sure are awesome as T-boosters. Beyond their aphrodisiac effects, they are loaded with zinc, while also supplying vitamin B6 and magnesium. So in effect, an oyster is like a natural self-contained T-boosting stack on the half-shell. I go off on the awesomeness of oysters for testosterone in this product review. Verdict: positive.
Basella Alba – studies have shown that this herb helps to boost testosterone levels in rats. Verdict: average.
Butea Superba – this herb is touted as being effective in boosting testosterone levels in the body, but no research can support these claims. Verdict: not likely.
Saw Palmetto – this fatty acid was long touted to help boost testosterone levels, but those claims turned out to be false. It is effective in supporting prostate health though, so may be of interest to older men with prostate concerns. Verdict: not valuable.
Top T-Booster Pick: Stinging nettle
This herb shows some decent potential as an indirect T-booster because it seems to fight aromatase and SHGB, which are both T-killer enzymes. By blocking them, nettle might help to keep testosterone circulating in the bloodstream, instead of getting eaten away by enzymes. Verdict: positive
Ginger – this spice has many uses, but the most common for supplements is to reduce nausea. Verdict: not very useful.
Ginseng – this supplement has been known to help boost energy levels. This is accomplished by promoting more testosterone production in the body. Verdict: very positive.
Paederia Foetida – this was originally used for male vitality, but it is rarely studied because it has been deemed relatively unimportant for testosterone production. Verdict: not useful.
Top T-Booster Pick: Luteolin
It sounds a little weird, and you might not have heard about it before, but I predict this ingredient will be one of the more popular t-boosters in the near future. Luteolin is natural, found in vegetables, and seems to be super effective at blocking certain enzymes that destroy circulating testosterone, positioning it as an indirect testosterone booster. It is possible I am jumping the gun a bit on this testosterone booster ingredient… or maybe I am just ahead of the curve. Keep an eye on it, for sure, especially in cutting-edge testosterone products. Verdict: positive, with a lot of potential.
Velvet Antler – generally derived from deer antlers, its use comes from ancient Chinese medical practices. It doesn’t appear to affect hormone production in humans. Verdict: not useful.
Vitamin D – vitamin D is one of the most important vitamins that people don’t get in their current foods. Vitamin D is tantamount, as a substance, to helping the body produce certain hormones, such as testosterone. When men are deficient in vitamin D, they often have low testosterone levels, too. Verdict: very positive.
Vitamin K2 – Vitamin K is concentrated in a man’s family jewels. Here it plays a role in forming T. While there is not much science behind the claim that vitamin K2 is a testosterone booster, it seems like when mammals don’t get enough of this vitamin, their testosterone levels tank. It is key to get the K2 form, which is the only form shown to have an effect on T levels. Verdict: positive.
Top T-Booster Pick: Magnesium
This essential mineral helps to relax the muscles which is important for building and toning muscles during a workout. So it’s no surprise that magnesium’s T-boosting activity has been studied mostly in athletes, with some showing it boosts both total T and free testosterone in both athletic and couch potato men, with the athletes reaping more testosterone benefits. It is also one of the minerals that many men fail to get enough of, so I consider it a must-have ingredient for both testosterone and masculine health products. Verdict: very positive.
Bryonia Laciniosa – this herb has been used for years as an aphrodisiac and fertility cure. Verdict: the potential is there.
Tribulus Terrestris – one of the most marketed and highly touted testosterone boosters, this supplement has never been proven to be effective in this regard. Verdict: inconclusive.
Vitamin B6 – this nutrient is one of the most essential in the body for producing testosterone. It helps to suppress estrogen and thus increases production of the male hormone. Verdict: very positive.
Top T-Booster Pick: Zinc
An amazing mineral for masculine health, zinc is used to make testosterone, and also signals for the synthesis of testosterone. Many men don’t get enough. And if you get way too little zinc, you might end up developing man-boobs while experiencing ball shrinkage… making it easy to see why this is so important for test. Read some reviews and you’ll see me freaking out over how awesome zinc is for virility and testosterone. Look for a good form though, like Zinc Gluconate or Zinc Citrate — cheap forms of Zinc are not only less absorbable (and less effective), they tend to have more of its notorious side effects, like stomach upset or tasting metal in your mouth. Verdict: very positive.
