No matter how much we try to deny it, low testosterone is something that most, if not all men will inevitably have to go through. It sucks, I know, but there’s a silver lining in testosterone boosters. These are supplements that can help you naturally and safely bring back your youthful T, and consequently, improve your quality of life.
Through this article, my goal is to give you the knowledge to uncover effective, or even great testosterone boosters. These will include features, ingredients, scientific evidence, and of course, a few tips and tricks. Moreover, I will also include a list of what I think are the best T-Booster supplements for low T. So, without further adieu, let’s do this.
WHY BOOST TESTOSTERONE?
Testosterone is a male steroid hormone (androgen) that’s mostly made by our testicles. Despite being a “male hormone”, however, T is actually found in both men and women. Consequently, both sexes also enjoy testosterone’s benefits albeit more being more pronounced in males.
That being said, testosterone plays a big role in the development of several male characteristics, including:
- body and facial hair
- voice depth
- body composition (muscle mass & fat distribution)
- physical performance
- sperm and red blood cell production
Clearly, testosterone’s importance to male health is undeniable.
Unfortunately though, there are several factors that contribute to low testosterone with aging perhaps being the most distinct.
During a man’s teenage to 20-something years, T is typically at its highest. However, testosterone concentrations tend to drop by about 1% each year, usually starting at age 30. To give you a better figure, let’s take a look at the numbers.
- Per research, 19 year old men normally have an average of 15.4 (7.2–31.1) nmol/L of testosterone whereas 40 year olds only have 13.0 (6.6–25.3) nmol/L.
As you can see, the older population have lower levels of T compared to their younger counterparts. That being said, I think there’s a good chance that you are (or you will be) suffering from low testosterone if you’ve gone past your 3rd or 4th decade. Beyond aging, however…
A poor lifestyle may also contribute to low T
For instance, you may not be getting enough sleep and/or nutrition.
- On sleep
- Research says that “the increase in testosterone is sleep, rather than circadian rhythm, dependent and requires at least 3 h of sleep with a normal architecture”. So, if you’re not getting enough rest, you put yourself at a greater risk for test deficiency.
- On nutrition
- Several vitamins and minerals are required for healthy levels of testosterone. Zinc and Vitamin D deficiency, for example, are linked to lower T. We’ll get more into detail about these and other important nutrients later.
Vices such as weed, alcohol, and perhaps even masturbation can also be factors that lead to low testosterone. Moreover, obesity and some medicine also have negative impacts on T.
There are other testosterone-killers that you encounter on a daily basic but that’s going to be a topic for another article.
Regardless of what causes low testosterone though, the side effects (symptoms) are the same:
- troubles in bed (low libido, erection problems)
- low strength and energy
- difficulty growing or maintaining muscle mass
- difficulty keeping away or shedding excess fat
- mental issues (mood swings, cognitive decline)

This is great because with more manufacturers producing T-boosters, you also get to have more safe and legal choices. On the contrary, this also makes picking the right one a tad bit more challenging. What’s more, a lot of what’s out there don’t actually work well (some don’t even work at all!)
On that note, knowing what to look for can be game-changing for you and your hunt for the best testosterone booster. So…
WHAT FEATURES SHOULD A T-BOOSTER FOR LOW T HAVE?
If you’ve skimmed through the rest of the article, I’m telling you, this is where you need to start paying attention.
Here, I’ll be listing the features that I recommend you should look for if you want a product that effectively boosts T. Furthermore, I will also be including a few of the most common (and effective) ingredients that essentially make these features possible. Let’s start with the most obvious.
POWERFUL AND MULTI-ANGULAR TESTOSTERONE BOOSTING
The logic is simple: you have low T? Find a testosterone booster that offers powerful testosterone boosting from several angles.
That being said, finding one isn’t actually as simple as it sounds. Like I said, there are a lot of supplements out there that are all bark and no bite. Furthermore, producing testosterone is a complex process of multiple steps. These “steps” are all part of the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis.
Basically, when one part of the HPG axis isn’t functioning properly, it affects how efficient your body produces testosterone. This, then, contributes to low T. So, to maximize your chances of buying a T booster that’s both efficient and powerful, try to look for one that optimizes multiple areas of the HPG axis. Check out these ingredients:
This amino can boost testosterone by 42% in just 12 days. That’s powerful! However, what’s more important here is how DAA works.
Per research, DAA enhances the release of GnRH (from the hypothalamus) which, in turn, triggers the release of LH (from the pituitary). When LH travels your blood stream and reaches your testicles (gonads), it can also signal the production and release of testosterone. So, basically, D-Aspartic Acid optimizes the entire HPG axis, making for world-class testosterone boosting efficiency.
Mucuna Pruriens – This herb’s active ingredient, levodopa (L-Dopa), plays a huge role in its ability to boost testosterone. Specifically, it boosts LH which, again, results in increased testosterone. More than that though, it also reduces prolactin – a hormone that can disrupt the flow of the HPG axis when elevated.
- Zinc – This mineral is a raw material required for testosterone synthesis. So, obviously, your body can’t make T without it. When you look for Zinc in your supplements, however, make sure to avoid the el cheapo versions such as oxide and sulfate. They’re hard to absorb and are therefore likely to bring a few gastric side effects.
- Vitamin D – Higher levels of this vitamin have been linked to higher levels of testosterone. Theoretically, this could be because your testicles also have Vitamin D receptors. When these receptors interact with the vitamin, along with increased LH, the result is boosted testosterone.
When you’ve found a supplement with one or all of above ingredients, you’re also going to wanna find ingredients that help keep a few other hormones and enzymes in check. You see, some of these hormones and enzymes don’t go well with testosterone and when they’re left unregulated, they can limit either the number or effectiveness of T.
On the other hand, when these hormones are properly managed, they also influence how well your body produces T, albeit indirectly. I’ve already mentioned one, prolactin, but let’s talk about a few others.
This hormone increases the more you get stressed, regardless of what kind of stress it is – be it mental, physical, emotional, or whatever. Hence, why it’s called the “stress hormone”.
Unfortunately though, cortisol shares an inverse relationship with testosterone. So, if you’re constantly stressed, chances are that your testosterone suffers with you, too. If this fits your current situation, I recommend looking for a supplement that has ingredients that help regulate stress (otherwise known as adaptogens). Below are some of the most common and effective ones:
- Tongkat Ali – Mostly known for its benefits on sex (sperm and libido), Tongkat Ali is also quite the capable testosterone booster. Furthermore, there’s research showing how the herb can lower cortisol in stressed individuals.
- Ashwagandha – From the ancient Indian’s of Ayurveda to modern testosterone supplements, Ashwagandha is still well-renowned for its adaptogenic properties. Furthermore, it also boosts testosterone, libido, sperm count and muscle strength. Truly an all-around herbal supplement for male health, if you ask me.
- Rhodiola Rosea – A sturdy plant that thrives in the harsh weather conditions of the Siberian Mountains, Rhodiola Rosea seems to impart its ruggedness to the people who take it. Specifically, it maintains levels of testosterone and cortisol even through episodes of stress.
Ah, Estrogen – testosterone’s greatest nemesis. Well, at least that’s how I generally see it.
Anyway, estrogen is known as the “female hormone” whereas androgens such as testosterone are called “male hormones”. Unfortunately, our bodies have aromatase which is an enzyme that converts our beloved T into estrogen. Yes, this happens.
That being said, more testosterone typically also leads to more estrogen. This weakens, if not nullifies the benefits of testosterone and can even lead to feminine side effects such as fat gain (especially around your chest and belly) and low libido. So, if you want to fully experience the effects of high T, I think it’s equally important that you choose a supplement with anti-estrogen or aromatase-inhibiting ingredients, such as:
- Diindolylmethane (DIM) – DIM is a compound found in cruciferous vegetables and there’s a ton of research supporting its aromatase-inhibiting properties. The downside, however, is that these studies are mostly focused on women’s health.
- Luteolin – This may not be as popular as DIM but, in my opinion, it’s the better aromatase inhibitor. According to research, Luteolin’s potency towards blocking aromatase activity is competitive to that of pharmaceutical-grade aromatase inhibitors.
Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin
Otherwise known as SHBG, this protein does exactly what its name suggests – bind to sex hormones. Testosterone, being a sex hormone, is one of SHBG’s targets. However, when testosterone is under the shackles of SHBG, it can’t interact with androgen receptors all over the body, essentially rendering it useless.
Hence, getting the most out of your testosterone also entails limiting the bioactivities of SHBG. These ingredients can help:
- Stinging Nettle – This herb has lignans that have a strong affinity to SHBG. Basically, these lignans bind to SHBG as testosterone’s substitute, leaving you with more “free” T.
- Boron – In as fast as 6 hours, Boron can significantly decrease levels of SHBG. In turn, this results in more “free” testosterone. Moreover, Boron also boosts other T Boosters such as Vitamin D And Magnesium.
- Magnesium – Speaking of Magnesium, this mineral also limits the effectiveness of SHBG. As research suggests, it weakens the bond between T and SHBG which gives your testosterone the ability to still communicate with androgen receptors.
HIGH QUALITY VITAMINS AND MINERALS
If you’re having trouble with low testosterone, you might just be having a hard time absorbing the right nutrients. This is a typical problem for aging men but it can happen to the young ones, too. If you don’t have a problem with absorption, your problem might simply be that you’re not getting enough of the right foods.
In this regard, make sure to check the quality of the vitamins and minerals used in your testosterone supplement. Also, I’ve already mentioned a few T-essential nutrients such as Vitamin D, Zinc, Boron, and Magnesium, but let me suggest a few more:
- Vitamin B6 – Similar to Vitamin D, levels of B6 seem to be linked with how much testosterone you’re making. The less Vitamin B6 in your system, the less T you have. Try to look for its bioactive P-5-P (P-L-P) form.
- Vitamin K – It’s not as heavily studied as the other nutrients but with what it already has, I wouldn’t be surprised if it becomes one of the more successful vitamins for testosterone. Look for the K2 form, either as MK-4, MK-7, MK-8, or MK-9.
When it comes to performance, we men generally value two things: bedroom (1) and athletic (2) performance. Personally, I think that’s because of our innate competitive natures. We want to please our woman (women?) like she’s never been pleased before and we want to win every sport we play. When we can’t do that, it can oftentimes weigh on us and that impacts our quality of life.
Admittedly, better sex and athleticism are almost automatically a given with boosted testosterone. So, you may not necessarily have to look for them. However, if you can get your hands on a supplement that can further enhance your bedroom and physical assets, that’s not a bad deal either. The more help the better – am I right, boys? Take a look:

They may have different designs, ways, and specialties but, in the end, they’re all great for men with low T.
