What are testosterone boosters?
Testosterone boosters are, well, supplements that boost testosterone. That’s really the simplest way to describe them. However, these supplements can literally and metaphorically come in many shapes and sizes. I’ll discuss those “shapes and sizes” in a bit but before we get to that, let’s go back to the basic fundamentals.
What is testosterone?
Also known as Test or T, testosterone is almost literally the driving force of everything we consider manly.
It’s an androgen (male sex/steroid hormone) that’s naturally produced mostly in our testes with a small amount being synthesized in our adrenal glands.
Biologically, testosterone plays a major role in the development of our male organs such as the penis, testicles, and prostate. Not only that, testosterone is also the hormone in charge of increasing the size of these said organs during puberty, along with the development of secondary male sex characteristics, such as:
- Deepening voice
- Increase in muscle mass and strength
- Higher bone density
- Growth of facial and body hair
- Heightened libido
As you can see, testosterone carries a huge responsibility to our being males. However, it can also be found in women in smaller amounts just as we men carry lower levels of the female hormone estrogen.
That said, the balance between estrogen, testosterone, and other related hormones is crucial to the biological function of both men and women. This, then, gives rise to another question:
Why boost testosterone?
Indeed, a lot of men (and women) wonder why there’s even a need to boost testosterone. I mean, if it’s naturally produced by our bodies, why is there even a need for testosterone supplements, right?
Unfortunately, testosterone levels naturally decline as we age and with it goes a bulk of our masculine vigor.
To get more into detail, let’s check out the results of a 2014 study on age-related levels of testosterone.
- At around 19 years old, testosterone levels are at its peak with 15.4 (7.2–31.1) nmol/L
- At around 40 years old, testosterone levels fall to 13.0 (6.6–25.3) nmol/L

With those results, it can be vaguely concluded that our testosterone is at its highest during our teen and early adult years and then falls as we enter late adulthood.
- According to numerous sources, the decline of testosterone starts at approximately 30 years old with a rate of 0.4%-1% per year resulting in about 4 out of 10 men over the age of 45 having low T.
In addition, there are a lot of environmental factors in our world today that can drive testosterone down even if you are a younger man.
Here are 10 factors that diminish testosterone levels, and really I could list a lot more!

- Soy products

As such, I think it’s not far-fetched to say that most of us, if not all, WILL need testosterone boosters at some point in time.
What are the side effects of low testosterone?
Low testosterone, male hypogonadism or, hypoandrogenism are three words that most of the time pertain to the same thing which is diminished levels of testosterone.
Low levels of this manly hormone can lead to a multitude of emasculating symptoms or side effects.
Aspects of men’s lives that’re commonly affected by low testosterone are the following:
- Sex – Low testosterone affects libido, erections, and even the quality and quantity of sperm
- Physical activity – You might find yourself tiring quicker from your usual activities or notice an increase in fatigue
- Body composition – Building or maintaining muscle mass as well as shedding excess fat might be more of a challenge. Bone density might decline, too.
- Mental – Episodes of mood swings, cognitive decline, sleep disturbances, and even depression are typical side effects of hormonal imbalance.
And now that you have an idea as to what testosterone is and its importance in optimal male function, we’re essentially done on the basics of testosterone.
Time to circle back to the main topic: testosterone boosters.
What are the types of testosterone boosters?
Well, there are basically two kinds of testosterone boosters – natural test boosters and synthetic test boosters.
Natural Testosterone Boosters
Not to sound redundant but, these are natural supplements that naturally increase levels of testosterone. They also support manhood in general and are not a detriment to health. Herbal extracts fall under this umbrella, as do natural forms of vitamins and minerals that support healthy testosterone.
Synthetic Testosterone Boosters
These are man-made, lab-synthesized supplements that increase levels of testosterone by supplying your body with actual androgens. Most of these androgens are modified to amplify specific effects of testosterone but by doing so, they also pose major health risks. Anabolic steroids and designer prohormones that’re used in bodybuilding are the most prominent examples.
Natural Testosterone Boosters VS. Anabolic Steroids
Anabolic steroids are molded from the natural anatomical structure of testosterone but are microscopically mutated to greatly magnify their anabolic potential. However, because they are synthetic, it goes against your body’s own T production which, if abused, eventually ends up in hormonal imbalance as well as harmful side effects to the liver, heart, and kidney.
On the contrary, natural testosterone boosters go with your body’s own natural mechanisms to help create more test. Although weaker in terms of building muscle compared to both anabolic steroids and designer prohormones, natural testosterone boosters can also garner similar results and at a safer manner too.
How do the best testosterone boosters work?
Testosterone boosters, in general, work their magic in the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis which is a series of glands in the reproductive system whose effects ultimately end in the production of sex hormones (androgens in men, estrogen in women).
That said, no single testosterone booster can act on all these different pathways but a collection or a stack of the best testosterone booster supplements that actually work contribute to an entire formula’s testosterone boosting potential.
The more pathways stimulated, the better the entire stack will be at boosting testosterone. Let’s talk about how quality testosterone boosters engage these masculine pathways.
The HPG axis in a nutshell
Your hypothalamus releases GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) which then binds to the anterior pituitary. This signals for the production of LH (luteinizing hormone) and FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) which is then released into the bloodstream. Once LH reaches the leydig cells of your gonads or more specifically, the testicles in males, this serves as the catalyst for a cascade of hormonal transformations that eventually end up with testosterone. Supply testosterone precursors
You can’t make ice without water and you can’t start a flame without something to burn. The same goes for testosterone.
Without the necessary raw materials, your body literally can’t make test.
Unlike anabolic steroids or prohormones that supply your body with actual androgens and disrupt the flow of your HPG axis, natural testosterone boosters give your body the nutrients that it needs to make its own without overriding your biology.
- The most notable among these kinds of testosterone boosters is Zinc because it promotes the conversion of cholesterol into testosterone. Simply said, no zinc = no test.
- DHEA is another ingredient you’ll see in natural testosterone boosters because it’s quite literally a precursor to testosterone. Because of this, however, it’s become quite the controversial ingredient and is banned in numerous sports leagues despite not actually doing much for T status.
Aid LH/FSH secretion
Continuing our trend on the HPG axis, testosterone boosters may also help testosterone status by increasing the release of hormones LH and FSH. Among these two though, only LH influences testosterone production but FSH is still crucial to male health for its effects on sperm. Anyhow, by increasing the pituitary gland’s release of LH, testosterone boosters may also signal the testes to produce more testosterone.
- Mucuna Pruriens‘ active compound is L-Dopa which research has shown to significantly increase levels of not only LH, but also testosterone.
- Another herb that increases levels of testosterone via the LH and anterior pituitary part of the HPG axis is Tongkat Ali as rat research suggests that it can also increase both LH and FSH.
Stimulate testosterone synthesis
Your tank could be full of the highest octane gasoline but with a faulty clutch, gearbox, or gas pedal, driving your car anywhere will be next to impossible.
This same analogy can be used for testosterone. You might have all the raw materials to produce test but if your body’s mechanisms are faulty, these raw materials aren’t going to be of much help.
Some examples of ingredients that act on these mechanisms are the following:
- Vitamin K – Rate-limiting enzymes in the process of testosterone synthesis such as Cyp11a can sometimes be hyperactive and this can lead to lower levels of testosterone. Vitamin K may be able to help in such cases by regulating the Cyp11a protein.
- D-Aspartic Acid and Coleus Forskohlii – Our cells communicate through signals and these signals are transmitted by messengers. As such, a disturbance in cell signalling could also impair testosterone production. DAA and Coleus Forskohlii have shown to improve this by stimulating the release of cAMP (cyclic adenosine monophosphate) which improves the transmission of signals towards the Leydig cells of our testes.
- Vitamin D – On the contrary, your body’s “messengers” may be running optimally but if the cells they’re sending signals to aren’t receiving it properly, testosterone production could still be hampered. It’s not fully understood yet but Vitamin D seems crucial to healthy levels of testosterone. Theoretically, this could be because Vitamin D receptors in the testes are tied to testosterone synthesis.
Block testosterone’s conversion
Believe it or not, your body naturally has enzymes that transform your beloved testosterone into other hormones. When test becomes something else, well, you obviously end up with lower levels of usable testosterone. In particular, there are two enzymes responsible for this.
This enzyme is responsible for converting testosterone into estrogen. By blocking the activity of this enzyme, you not only encourage higher levels of testosterone, you also limit estrogen’s potential opposition on T.
- To my observation, the most common aromatase inhibitor used in testosterone boosters is Diindolylmethane (DIM). True enough, DIM’s popularity does come with potential. However, research on its effects on us men have yet to catch up to the large pool of evidence it has on post-menopausal women.
- Another notable aromatase inhibitor is Luteolin. Despite not being as widely used as DIM, I personally think it holds more promise. In truth though, there still isn’t much solid research done on Luteolin but with what it currently has, it already looks quite effective.
If aromatase converts testosterone into THE feminine hormone (estrogen), 5-alpha-reductase converts testosterone into another androgen known as dihydrotestosterone or simply DHT. In predisposed men, excess levels of DHT can lead to prostate issues and male pattern baldness. As such, blocking off the bioactivities of 5-alpha-reductase not only leads to increased levels of testosterone but also adds a layer of prostate protection. The following ingredients are the common DHT blockers in T boosters:
- Fenugreek is probably the most common 5-alpha-reductase blocker used in natural testosterone boosters. Furthermore, it is scientifically shown to improve libido and muscle strength so it’s a pretty damn good ergogenic herb as well.
- Other herbs used in T-boosting products are Saw Palmetto and Nettle. Both of these are medically used for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) for their ability to reduce excess levels of DHT.
DHT is NOT as bad as you think
Pharmaceutical companies have made a fortune out of DHT’s reputation as the hormone responsible for male balding and enlarged prostates but while this may be partly true, it typically only happens in older men who’re genetically predisposed to these conditions.
What these companies aren’t telling you though, is that DHT is actually a more potent androgen than testosterone virtually everywhere else except skeletal muscle. As such, in most cases (i.e., younger men), messing with DHT may result in a net loss of androgens despite potentially growing more muscular.
Basically, your total testosterone is composed of 3 categories:
- “Free” Testosterone – 0.5% to 3.0%
- Albumin-bound Testosterone – 54 to 68%
- SHBG-bound Testosterone – 30 to 40%
You see, although SHBG binds a lower percentage of testosterone compared to Albumin, it also has a very tight bond on testosterone which essentially neutralizes its activity. Albumin on the other hand, has an affinity to test that’s several times weaker than SHBG, allowing for its bound hormones to still be able to interact with androgen receptors and target tissues.
Clinically, it’s believed that only bioavailable testosterone (“free” + Albumin-bound testosterone) can engage in the biological activities of test (i.e., higher libido, bulkier build, etc.). Basically, by reducing the number of SHGB or by limiting its binding activity, we also increase the number of bioavailable T that can do their manly duties. Check out the supplements that counter SHBG below.
- Boron – If you see a testosterone booster that claims to boost “free” testosterone in 1 week, that’s likely because they have this mineral in their stack. Not only does it lower levels of SHBG, it also lowers levels of estriadol.
- Stinging Nettle – This plant contains lignans that have a strong affinity to SHBG. These lignans bind to SHBG in place of testosterone for more “free” T.
- Tongkat Ali – Aside from boosting testosterone via increased LH release, this herb also seems capable of reducing levels of SHBG.
Relieve stress (cortisol)
Aside from the HPG Axis, other neuroendocrine systems exist. One of these systems is the HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis which controls the body’s fight-or-flight response to stress. Like the HPG axis, the HPA axis also forms a chain of events that ultimately end in the production of a specific hormone and in this case, it’s the stress hormone cortisol.
In theory, activating your body’s HPA axis also disturbs the flow of your HPG axis. Although this hasn’t been totally proven yet, there are multiple evidences that point towards higher levels of cortisol having negative implications on testosterone.
- In testosterone boosting supplements, this is where adaptogens such as Ashwagandha, Ginseng, and Rhodiola come in. These are herbs that cause “a state of nonspecifically increased resistance” and through this, they are able to directly or indirectly lower levels of cortisol. Theoretically, this means they’re also able to maintain healthy levels of test under conditions of stress like in the intense exercises routinely done in bodybuilding.
How do testosterone boosters help my physique?
When it comes to metabolism, your body basically has two states:
- Anabolic – The state where our body builds
- Catabolic – The state where our body destroys
Staying in the anabolic state gets harder as the stresses and fatigue caused by strict dieting and physical exertion become more taxing. When this happens, catabolic hormones such as cortisol and estrogen spike up and disrupt your body’s anabolic hormonal profile leading to dawdling growth.
In bodybuilding, the role of adaptogens and aromatase inhibitors is to optimize the ratio of estrogen and cortisol to testosterone and thereby helping to achieve a more anabolic metabolism conducive to muscle growth.
Now that we’ve discussed how natural testosterone boosters engage the numerous pathways of T production, let’s move on to another important issue.
The safety and legality of testosterone boosters
Are testosterone boosters safe? are they legal? These are two questions that play major factors in a man’s decision to try these manly supplements and the answer to both is YES. Well, generally speaking that is. After all, the point to being a natural testosterone booster is to be relatively risk-free, for daily use. Let’s talk about them in more detail.
Are testosterone boosters safe?
This concept is a bit complex because while the ultimate goal of any testosterone booster is, obviously, to boost test, each of their formulas are designed differently. They contain separate combinations of ingredients and these ingredients have different qualities, dosages, and interactions with each other which determine both the product’s benefits and side effects.
That said, most testosterone boosters come with mild side effects such as GI irritation, headaches, and a bit of nausea. For the more powerful ones, there might be mood swings and acne. These aren’t life-threatening and are to be expected so don’t be alarmed if you experience any of these whilst on a test boosting cycle.
Are testosterone boosters legal?
Compared to the concept of safety regarding these products, this isn’t as complicated. As far as I know, the government (FDA) doesn’t regulate the recreational use of natural testosterone boosters which explains why it’s readily available as an over-the-counter dietary supplement or at online retailers such as Amazon and GNC.
In terms of sports and athletics, however, there is a bit of caution as the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has a long list of prohibited substances. Particularly for testosterone boosting supplements, this substance usually comes in the form of DHEA which as I’ve already discussed, is a testosterone precursor that doesn’t actually do much for test. Regardless, make sure to check with your league’s regulations if you’re a competitive athlete.
What are the benefits of testosterone boosters?
Improve sex life
In my experience writing reviews, I can say that elevated sex drive (libido) has to be the most prioritized benefit of a good majority of testosterone supplements. In fact, some stacks ONLY include libido boosters.
Moreover, in an effort to help maximize your sex life, some products take it a few steps higher and go as far as improving the quality and quantity of your sperm, make your erections more rigid, and give you more stamina to last longer in bed.
Is boosting libido the same as boosting testosterone?
Indeed, both of these can be a bit confusing as a lot of people take testosterone supplements to rejuvenate their sex drive. However, while both of them are strongly linked with each other, they’re actually not the same things.
Boosting testosterone almost automatically grants you a higher sex drive because that’s a strong part of what it does. However, solely boosting libido doesn’t necessarily equate to boosted test because there’s more to being horny than just a spike to our favorite manly hormone.
Enhance body composition
In terms of body composition, testosterone boosters basically bolster 2 things: muscle and fat.
By increasing your amount of bioavailable testosterone, you also have more androgens capable of latching on to the receptors on your skeletal muscles. This, then, triggers for increased protein synthesis which improves muscle growth and recovery as well as performance and strength.
When it comes to fat, boosted testosterone plays a huge role as well. As the hypogonadal-obesity cycle states, your body prefers to store fat in your belly when you have low levels of testosterone and as your T levels further decline, the more fat you’ll find in your belly. This is because with increased fatty-tissue, there is also an increase in aromatase activity. For this reason, testosterone supplements geared towards bodybuilding almost always include aromatase-inhibitors in their stack.
Will testosterone boosters improve bone health as well?
This is a rather complicated topic because when it comes to hormones, research suggests that estrogen plays a larger role than testosterone in terms of bone strength. However, an imbalance on these two hormones may also negatively influence bone health. So, yes, testosterone boosters can also improve bone health albeit on a more complex and indirect pathway.
Bolster mental health
For all you meat-heads and playboys out there, androgen receptors aren’t just found on your gonads and muscles. Your brain cells have a lot of T receptors too and because of this, testosterone levels largely impact your mood and cognition.
Promote cardiac health
In the past, testosterone was thought to be detrimental to cardiovascular health as the incidence of men experiencing coronary issues was twice that of women. With increasing studies on this thought, however, the blame should actually be placed on the natural decline of testosterone that comes with increasing age as lower levels of T are associated with atherosclerosis (arterial hardening/narrowing).
As evidenced by this research, “epidemiological studies show an inverse relationship between testosterone levels and surrogate markers of atherosclerosis, which suggests that it may be a testosterone deficient state, rather than male sex which is associated with CAD…Consequently, increasing evidence suggests that the process of atherosclerosis is beneficially modulated by testosterone.”
The actual definition of “Vitality” is arguable as different sources seem to cite different things. For instance, google search defines it as “the state of being strong and active” while one of Merriam-Webster’s definitions says it’s the “capacity to live and develop”.
Regardless of how you word it though, male vitality is basically the combination of all the above benefits. This is particularly evident in older men who wish to restore their youthful vigor.
What are the best T-Booster supplements?
To be honest, choosing “the best” is both subjective and objective. It’s subjective in the sense that a lot of it is really just personal preference. In essence, some testosterone booster supplements may fit the wants and needs of some while others may find them useless.
To me though, what’s more important is the objective part as this involves actual scientific evidence and as the testosterone boosting industry grows, so does the science behind its supplements. That said, it’ll take forever if I include ALL the possible ingredients that can boost testosterone in this list. What you’ll see here though, are a bunch of my personal favorites and some of the most popular ones used in most stacks. Let’s start.
My top picks for the best testosterone booster supplements
D-Aspartic Acid – With research proving that this amino acid can boost testosterone by a massive 42% in just 12 days, this seems to currently be the most powerful known T booster. For this very reason, a lot of the most effective testosterone products build their formulas around it.
- Mucuna Pruriens – This plant’s active ingredient, L-DOPA, works with the natural flow of the HPG axis. It suppresses prolactin while also increasing levels of LH and FSH, ultimately improving testosterone and sperm status.
- Zinc – This mineral can be found heavily concentrated in the Leydig cells of the testes where it literally provides raw materials in the process of testosterone synthesis. Furthermore, it helps maintain high levels of testosterone after an intense workout and reduce levels of prolactin. This is one mineral I wouldn’t to find missing in any T boosting product.
- Boron – To me, this sits right up there with Zinc as two of the manliest minerals used in T boosting stacks. In fact, it’s so manly, it doesn’t just boost androgens (T and DHT), it also boosts levels of other testosterone boosting supplements (Magnesium and Vitamin D) as well as reducing levels of T-killers (SHBG and estriadol).
- Luteolin – This is seen is T boosting stacks for its ability to lower levels of estrogen but unlike other estrogen-blockers, the path that Luteolin seems to take is absolutely killer (but in a good way). Not only does it inhibit the expression of the aromatase enzyme, it also destabilizes the aromatase protein itself.
Other notable testosterone booster herbs
- Fenugreek – This herb works in many ways, and has plenty of masculine benefits including enhancements in libido and body composition. As a testosterone booster, it inhibits aromatase and 5-alpha-reductase en route to lower levels of estrogen and DHT along with more T.
- Tongkat Ali – Traditionally recognized as a potent libido booster, this legendary plant is also capable of engaging testosterone production in a number of pathways. As research suggests, it can boost testosterone by up to 37% while also lowering cortisol by 16% in moderately stressed individuals.
- Ashwagandha – It’s mainly an adaptogen that helps lower levels of cortisol but it also has other manly benefits. In the results of one study, a branded form of Ashwagandha (KSM-66®) can elevate levels of sperm by 167%, testosterone by 17%, and LH by 34%.
- Rhodiola – Also an adaptogen that helps the body adapt to stress. To be more particular, physical stress (i.e., exercise and manual labor). Compared to Ashwagandha, however, Rhodiola doesn’t look like it has as much solid evidence. Regardless, the potential is there to maintain testosterone levels after workouts while also lowering levels of estrogen.
- Shilajit – An herbomineral that, as research shows, has the capacity to improve several sperm parameters, boost testosterone by up to 23.5%, and lower markers of oxidative stress. Furthermore, it also enhances ATP production for an ergogenic boost in energy.
- Stinging Nettle and Saw Palmetto – If I had to choose between these two herbs, I’d personally choose Nettle because unlike Saw Palmetto, it can inhibit aromatase and SHBG. Nevertheless, both of these plants have Beta Sitosterol – the compound responsible for their DHT lowering and prostate protecting properties.
- Coleus Forskohlii – A study shows that Forskolin, the active compound of Coleus Forskohlii, can impact elements of body composition and testosterone. The results of the study show lower fat percentage and fat mass as well as boosted testosterone.

What makes ZMA so legendary?
ZMA is the combination of Zinc, Magnesium, and Vitamin B6. As I’ve already discussed, these 3 nutrients are pretty darn manly by themselves but combined? Oh my goodness – they become so much better. As shown in this research, athletes who supplemented with ZMA had a 30% increase in testosterone as well as an 11.6% increase in muscle gains. However, ZMA only seems to be effective on men with already deficient levels of its individual nutrients.
Popular testosterone booster ingredients that don’t actually boost T
- Tribulus Terrestris – Perhaps the most popular herb in T boosting stacks, Tribulus Terrestris is an effective libido booster that doesn’t actually do much for testosterone. To be fair, it may improve test status in older males who have pre-existing low levels of our favorite masculine hormone.
- Maca – Like Tribulus, this has been heavily marketed as a potent testosterone booster. Also like tribulus, it mostly elevates sex drive without necessarily having any sort of impact on testosterone.
- Horny Goat Weed – This one’s more of a testosterone mimic rather than a true testosterone booster with heightened libido as its most prominent benefit.
- L-Arginine – An amino acid that’s better suited in pre-workout (PWO) products for its nitric oxide boosting properties. This also gives it the ability to improve circulation for better workout pumps and more rigid erections. The bolstered blood flow might have an impact on testosterone but honestly, I wouldn’t count on it.
