If you’ve been interested on testosterone boosting supplements for a bit of time now, you’ve most probably come across aromatase inhibitors. Luteolin is one of these aromatase inhibitors. Scientifically named 3′,4′,5,7-Tetrahydroxyflavone, it’s a polyphenolic compound (flavonoid) that’s universally present as constituents of flowering food plants such as herbs, fruits, and vegetables.
Luteolin doesn’t actually seem to have any direct testosterone boosting properties but don’t click away just yet. It’s still a pretty manly compound. Which brings us to the question…
WHY TEST BOOSTER SUPPLEMENTS USE LUTEOLIN?
By now, you should already know that Luteolin inhibits aromatase activity but what the hell does that even do? To better answer why testosterone boosters utilize Luteolin, allow me to further explain what aromatase inhibitors are.
What’s the deal with Aromatase Inhibitors?
Aromatase (aka estrogen synthetase), is the flavonoid responsible for the aromatization or the conversion of androgens such as testosterone to estrogen – the primary female hormone. Yup, that’s right. Your testosterone becomes estrogen because of aromatase. You won’t necessarily lose your penis and grow a vagina but with testosterone turning into estrogen, you’re left with a manhood that’s lower than what you’d normally like.
Aromatase inhibitors such as Luteolin, well, they basically reduce the amount of testosterone converting into estrogen, leading to (obviously) more test.
As we age, we typically get lower levels of testosterone. This age related decline in our favorite manly hormone can be controlled with aromatase inhibitors. By regulating the amount of test being converted intro estrogen, Luteolin helps in turning back the clock into having a more youthful T:E ratio.
In bodybuilding, men supplement with aromatase inhibitors for this very same reason. Simply said, higher levels of testosterone and lower levels of estrogen helps promote an anabolic internal environment, leading to a more masculine physique and bigger, leaner muscles.
Did you know? Among the most popular natural testosterone boosting supplements in today’s market is D-Aspartic Acid (DAA) as it can increase testosterone by 42% in just 12 days. That makes it both powerful and efficient. However, another study shows that it can also increase aromatase activity, leading to more estrogen. This is a concern you should be watching out for.
When you find yourself looking at a test boosting stack with DAA, make sure to also look for some kind of estrogen blocker such as Luteolin. This is a formulation strategy that smart and well formulated supplements use to allow DAA to freely raise testosterone while its estrogen boosting effects are held in check.
STUDIES ON LUTEOLIN SUGGEST:
Honestly though, there really isn’t much research (yet) surrounding Luteolin but for what it’s worth, it holds huge potential because of the following:
Competitive Aromatase Inhibition
Competition! Alright, now we’re talking. We men are designed to be drawn to competition so this is good. A study evaluated the abilities of lignans and flavonoids to inhibit aromatase in a human preadipose cell culture system by measuring their Ki values. The results are the following:
- enterolactone (Enl) with Ki value of 14.4 microM
- 3′-demethoxy-3O-demethylmatairesinol (DMDM) with Ki value of 5.0 microM
- didemethoxymatairesinol (DDMM) with Ki value of 7.3 microM
- coumestrol with Ki values of 1.3 microM
- luteolin with Ki values of 4.8 microM
- kaempferol with Ki values of 27.2 microM
These results were then compared to Aminoglutethimide which is a pharmaceutical aromatase inhibitor. After comparison, the researchers then concluded that “the inhibition by all compounds (including Luteolin) to be competitive”. If science says it’s competitive, then it sure as hell must be.
Potent Estrogen-Blocking Activity
Luteolin is sort of like a serial killer but not in a bad way because it doesn’t kill people. In fact, it looks pretty safe. As one study states, “long-term treatment (with Luteolin) did not show any apparent toxicity”. What it does kill though, is estrogen. How does it go about its assassination? Well, let me show you.
A research studied the inhibitory effect of Luteolin on estrogen biosynthesis and as the research suggests, Luteolin just straight-up over-kills this female hormone.
As the study states, “luteolin potently inhibited estrogen biosynthesis”. Meaning, it stops estrogen in its tracks before it was even made. It does so by inhibiting aromatase protein expression in KGN and HEK293A cells. Additionally, the study also sayd that Luteolin “promoted aromatase protein degradation”.
So, not only does Luteolin stop the production of estrogen, it even targets aromatase itself and degrades it. It’s like an angry predator who’s not content at eating his prey and goes for the prey’s entire family, too. That’s sick. But in a good way.
The researchers concluded the study by saying that while Luteolin does stop estrogen biosynthesis “by decreasing aromatase expression and destabilizing aromatase protein”, it also “warrants further investigation”.
How Do I Take Luteolin?
Here’s the thing. Research on Luteolin is currently still at its early stages so I can’t really say for sure how much you should be taking or how much you should be looking for in testosterone boosting supplements.
What I noticed though, is that in my time writing reviews and analyzing testosterone boosters, products who use Luteolin usually dose it somewhere around 50-75 mg. That should be a safe range to target based on my personal observations. If you’re looking for a single number, I’d say somewhere around 60 mg should be good for a day.
You see, when you want to enhance your overall manliness, it’s not enough to just boost testosterone because while it does play the principal role, it’s also not the only player. By regulating estrogen, its feminine counterpart, you tweak your body into becoming manlier than you ever thought it could be and aromatase inhibitors like Luteolin help do the job.
Admittedly though, Luteolin does need more scientific evidence in its books. However, the way I see it, the research that it currently has is off to a good start and it holds so much promise. Today, it’s probably not the most popular aromatase inhibitor you’ll see in natural testosterone boosters but I’d like to think that in the near future, it will be.
