If you’re here reading this article, you’re most probably one of those duds who’re in to bodybuilding. See, the goal in bodybuilding is to become the biggest and leanest mofo in the world but it’s not that easy to do so a lot of people turn their attention towards steroids, prohormones and testosterone boosters.
Steroids are usually the first ones to get crossed off the list for its notoriously dangerous reputation which then leads us to testosterone boosters and prohormones. What are they and what’s the difference? Let’s find out.
WHAT ARE PROHORMONES?
As the name already suggests, it favors hormones as opposed to being an anti-hormone. What does this mean, though? Simply said, prohormones promote and amplify the effects of hormones by being hormone precursors. More importantly for this topic and bodybuilding, prohormones magnify the effects of androgens such as testosterone.
Admittedly though, our bodies also produce some prohormones. In fact, prohormones that are available to buy in the market are structurally designed to be similar to testosterone.
That’s right. “Designed”. Because while the ones that our own bodies make are natural, the ones sold outside are lab synthesized and for that very same reason, the scientists can alter the molecular structure of prohormones to drastically enhance androgenic effects such as muscle growth. These are called designer prohormones.
HOW DO PROHORMONES WORK?
As I’ve said, prohormones and testosterone are closely similar. However, the hair-split differences between the two are crucial.
By specifically altering the molecular structure of these testosterone precursors, the end result is enhanced physical performance and anabolism – a metabolic state where the body builds muscle from protein. Aside from boosting testosterone, these effects are what makes prohormones so tantalizing to athletes and bodybuilders.
To further explain how it works, let’s take a look at one of the most well-known prohormones: Androstenedione.
It was developed by German scientists back in 1970 to help enhance the athletic prowess of their German olympians. According to this study, Androstenedione enhances muscle mass, athletic performance, mood, and aggression. Ideally, these benefits should yield the same results as taking anabolic steroids, which according to this study, should increase strength by 5-20% with an increase of 2-5 kg in body weight attributed to an increase in lean muscle. Sounds pretty good from here, right?
However, Androstenedione and other prohormones have a short half-life. This means that they don’t stay in our bodies for long. On the bright side, this lessens the probability of prohormones triggering a positive drug test. On the more shady end, it may also not be in our bodies long enough to sustain a working anabolic environment. In fact, according to this article, many studies have suggested that prohormones just aren’t living up to their marketing claims.
Prohormones VS. Anabolic Steroids
Prohormones and Anabolic Steroids are closely related. Both of them are laboratory synthesized to increase testosterone and enhance anabolic growth. The difference lies in that Anabolic Steroids are basically modified testosterone while prohormones are essentially steroid precursors that our bodies then quickly convert to testosterone. They’re both also banned to many sporting organizations which makes them illegal to take.
SIDE EFFECTS OF PROHORMONES
Because prohormones are hormonal precursors, they don’t just convert into testosterone. Under certain circumstances, they can also convert into estrogen. This rise in estrogen levels lead to all kinds of girly side effects including the growth of a pair of perky titties (aka man-boobs).
The side effects don’t stop there though. Actually, man-boobs are just scraping the tip of the iceberg and there are far more serious side effects that pose life-endangering risks. Such as the following:
- Liver – Prohormones give you synthetic hormone precursors to increase testosterone. This puts your liver under heavy stress because it’s being made to process more than it normally should leading to liver complications.
- Cardiac – Prohormones screw up your lipid panel results because it lowers levels of “good” cholesterol (High Density Lipoprotein) while also also increasing levels of “bad” cholesterol (Low Density Lipoprotein). Prohormones have also been linked to issues with blood pressure and circulation. All these point towards problems with cardiac health.
- Cancer – With unusually high levels of estrogen, the use of prohormones have been linked to cancers of the prostate and pancreas.
Unaesthetic side effects have also been observed with prohormones skewing hormonal balances. These include:
- Hair loss
- Water retention
- Oily skin
As you can see, prohormones have numerous side-effects including ones that put your life in danger. Additionally, I’ve already said that their short half-life don’t make them very effective (as compared to anabolic steroids). As a whole, I say avoid these illegal and unsafe supplements. There are better ways to build muscle and increase testosterone. Which brings us to testosterone boosters.
WHAT ARE TESTOSTERONE BOOSTERS?
While prohormones increase testosterone by supplying man-made hormone precursors, testosterone boosters increase testosterone by working synchronously with your body’s natural testosterone production. Also, while prohormones are designed to magnify the anabolic effects of testosterone, T-boosters tend to amplify testosterone as a whole.
HOW TO TESTOSTERONE BOOSTERS WORK?
Like I said, testosterone boosters amplify testosterone as a whole. This means that the benefits aren’t limited to just performance and muscle growth. According to this article, some of the benefits of testosterone are as follows:
- Enhanced bone density
- Improved fat distribution
- Gains in muscle strength and size
- Boosts in sex drive and sperm production
Testosterone boosting stacks are sometimes made of just one ingredient but most of the time, they’re formulated to include a varying number of vitamins, minerals, and herbs that are meant to not only boost testosterone, but also promote manly health.
Admittedly though, some testosterone boosters are more focused on one part of manly health as compared to boosting manly health entirely. For example, some testosterone boosters are locked in on boosting libido more than actually boosting testosterone while some also focus on the anabolic side of manly health.
Testosterone boosters do this by providing raw materials used in the making of testosterone, signaling for increased testosterone production and release into the blood stream, while also blocking testosterone from converting into estrogen.
Testosterone starts a progressive decline at about the age of 30. Therefore, young guys in their early 20’s don’t typically have their eyes on testosterone boosters but these young men can still benefit from T-boosters by improving athletic performance and anabolic growth.
Some males who’re already past their 30’s however, will feel a decrease in sex drive, energy levels, muscle mass, and even mental clarity. These could be signs of declining testosterone. As such, they seek the help of testosterone boosters to curb the effects of aging.
SIDE EFFECTS OF TESTOSTERONE BOOSTERS
Because testosterone boosters are generally made of all-natural ingredients meant to work with your body’s natural testosterone production, they’re naturally safe for consumption. This also makes them legal and widely available to buy anywhere including online sellers and retailers.
Even so, messing with hormones can lead to undesired effects. Thankfully, the ones associated with testosterone boosters are mild ones, including:
- Acne breakouts
- Excessive hair loss
- Shorter tempers

Honestly, prohormones being technically just a step behind anabolic steroids, probably hold more promise in terms of building muscle. However, because of its close relation to steroids, they also hold the same dangerous risks and if I’m being frank about it, it’s just not worth it.
If your goal was to enhance your overall manliness and enhance anabolic growth, I suggest you do it the right and legal way. Don’t settle for synthetic drugs that may enhance muscle growth at the cost of decreasing your own life span.
With natural testosterone boosters, you can also make massive gains coupled with a balanced diet and a good weight training regimen. You not only improve your bodybuilding experience with testosterone boosters, you improve the quality of your life, too.
Moreover, testosterone boosters don’t just stop at anabolic growth. They’re versatile dietary supplements with benefits that range over a myriad of manly characteristics. Whatever your goal is, whether it be curbing the side effects of aging or just plainly for use in exercise or sex, there’s a testosterone booster out there for you and this website can help you find it.
