As you go through your journey towards finding the best testosterone booster supplement, you’ll quickly discover that different products use different sets of vitamins, minerals, and herbs. Consequently, you’ll soon find that one of your biggest challenge is figuring out which of these ingredients work and which ones don’t.
On this page, I talk about a wide range of these ingredients, including some tried-and-true test boosters, some promising newcomers, and a few duds that are still pretty good for masculine health.
They can be taken as standalone supplements, but the real magic happens when you stack certain ingredients together. Some of them actually work better as a team which is why I’ve also compiled a short list of testosterone booster supplements that effectively and synergistically use these manly ingredients. WHAT ARE THE BEST TESTOSTERONE BOOSTER INGREDIENTS?
Obviously, the ideal ingredients to use in testosterone supplements are ones that boost testosterone – plain and simple. Realistically, however, some of the best T boosting products this 2018 have formulas that aren’t purely made up of T booster ingredients. Nugenix Ultimate is a good example.
That’s crazy, right?
Well, that’s because some manufacturers opt to use ingredients that bolster the characteristics associated with high testosterone rather than increasing the hormone itself. When these manly yet non-T-boosting ingredients are paired with actual test boosters, it makes you feel the effects of boosted T that much better.
That being said, let’s talk about the actual ingredients.
Testosterone Booster Ingredients – What Works?
When talking about T booster ingredients, there’s no way I could leave out D Aspartic Acid. So, I’m discussing it first.
Also called DAA, this amino acid is a balls-out sex hormone supercharger that directly promotes T production in men. It is my favorite T-booster ingredient, which you probably know if you’ve read my reviews. The hottest research on DAA shows a 42% increase in testosterone in under 2 weeks, and a special form called D-AA-CC might even be stronger due to its superior bioavailability.
Boron – With research showing increased “free” testosterone in as little as one week, this mineral is an ingredient that delivers fast results . Moreover, Boron also increases Vitamin D concentrations while helping sustain Magnesium – both are solid T boosters, too. Clearly, it’s an ingredient you want in your stack.
Vitamin D – Speaking of Vitamin D, it’s one of the most important vitamins that people don’t get in their current foods. Vitamin D is tantamount, as a substance, to helping the body produce certain hormones, such as testosterone. When men are deficient in vitamin D, they often have low testosterone levels, too.
Here’s another T booster that I’d like to highlight. Mucuna works for testosterone because it blocks some girly hormones while boosting test “helpers.” It seems especially good for men with virility problems — one study found it boosted T by 39 percent in men with low sperm count. It is an awesome ingredient for test stacks, but be sure you buy it standardized for its active ingredient levodopa (L-Dopa) so you get maximum benefit.
Fenugreek – This seed-herb is freakin’ legendary as a physical performance booster that also helps with male sex drive. Abundant research suggests it has a role in supporting healthy testosterone levels. The one drawback is that it seems to drive down DHT, which is another masculine hormone that has testosterone-like effects. Oh, and it makes piss smell like maple syrup, too, if that’s anyone’s concern.
Saw Palmetto – Speaking of DHT, these berries are supposedly capable of inhibiting the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme responsible for converting T to DHT. Technically, this could also be considered “T boosting” but, honestly, it’s not for everyone. It’s great for prostate health though.
This herb shows some decent potential as an indirect T-booster because it seems to fight aromatase and SHGB, which are both T-killer enzymes. By blocking them, nettle might help to keep testosterone circulating in the bloodstream, instead of getting eaten away by enzymes.
Vitamin K2 – Vitamin K is concentrated in a man’s family jewels where it plays a role in forming T. Sadly, I don’t see this vitamin star in too many testosterone supplements. It’s probably because it has relatively less scientific evidence but from what it does have, it seems that mammals who don’t get enough of this vitamin have less testosterone in their tank. It is key to get the K2 form, which is the only form shown to have an effect on T levels.
Vitamin B6 – This vitamin is one of the most essential nutrients in the body for producing testosterone. There are studies that show how low levels of Vitamin B6 are correlated to low T. It also helps suppress estrogen which, indirectly, also supports the male hormone.
An amazing mineral for masculine health, zinc is used to naturally make testosterone, and also signals for the synthesis of testosterone. Many men don’t get enough. And if you get way too little zinc, you might end up developing man-boobs while experiencing ball shrinkage… making it easy to see why this is so important for test and male health. Read some reviews and you’ll see me freaking out over how awesome zinc is for virility and testosterone. Look for a good form though, like Zinc Gluconate or Zinc Citrate — cheap forms of Zinc are not only less absorbable (and less effective), they tend to have more of its notorious side effects, like stomach upset or tasting metal in your mouth.
Ginseng – Traditionally used to treat several health conditions, Ginseng has been one of the most popular herbs for quite some time now. Generally, these herbs help with stress and fatigue which, indirectly, is great for testosterone, too. Unfortunately, the research supporting Ginseng’s use as a T booster isn’t quite up to date – but, yes, it’s there. That being said, I suggest you look for Panax Ginseng as it seems to have the most man-enhancing potential.
Shilajit – Translated to “Rock Conqueror” in Sanskrit, Shilajit is the product of humus and decomposing plants that have been pressed between several layers of rocks for over a million years. Mind you, that’s not an exaggeration. For male health, it seems to not only be capable of improving testosterone but also sperm and stamina.
This essential mineral helps to relax the muscles which is important for building and toning muscles during a workout. So it’s no surprise that magnesium’s T-boosting activity has been studied mostly in athletes, with some showing it boosts both total T and free testosterone in both athletic and couch potato men, with the athletes reaping more testosterone benefits. It is also one of the minerals that many men fail to get enough of, so I consider it a must-have ingredient for both testosterone and masculine health products.
Coleus Forskohlii – Or perhaps more importantly, Forskolin – the active compound found in Coleus Forskohlii. Per research, it can decrease body fat percentage and fat mass while also improving bone mass and increasing lean muscle. Beyond the physical affects, however, the same research also says it can increase “free” total testosterone.
Tongkat Ali – also known as Longjack, this root herb is most famous as an off-the-charts sex drive enhancer. It also helps with stress responses and has been shown in some research to significantly raise testosterone in men. These effects potentially make it great for sports and bodybuilding, too! It’s just awesome for overall manliness – good as a standalone supplement but even better as a part of a stack.
It sounds a little weird, and you might not have heard about it before, but I predict this ingredient will be one of the more popular t-boosters in the near future. Luteolin is natural, found in vegetables, and seems to be super effective at blocking certain enzymes that destroy circulating testosterone, positioning it as an indirect testosterone booster. It is possible I am jumping the gun a bit on this testosterone booster ingredient… or maybe I am just ahead of the curve. Keep an eye on it, for sure, especially in cutting-edge testosterone products.
Rhodiola Rosea – This herb doesn’t technically increase levels of testosterone. However, Rhodiola Rosea, an adaptogenic herb with legendary history that dates back as far as ancient Scandinavia, helps maintain levels of testosterone in spite of stress and fatigue. Basically, it makes your body feel as if you weren’t stressed at all.
Ashwgandha – Used in ancient Ayurveda to balance the mind, body, and spirit, Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb that helps the body adapt to stress. It also has research-backed benefits on its ability to improve sex, energy, and testosterone as well as help build muscle. When buying Ashwagadha, I suggest you look for KSM-66® as this looks to be the best for testosterone although other brands may work, too.
I think oysters are disgusting as food, but they sure are awesome as T-boosters. Beyond their aphrodisiac effects, they are loaded with zinc, while also supplying vitamin B6 and magnesium. So in effect, an oyster is like a natural self-contained T-boosting stack on the half-shell.
PROMISING T-BOOSTER INGREDIENTS THAT PROBABLY WORK
Anacylus Pyrethrum – used as an aphrodisiac in certain cultures, it has been found to be effective in boosting testosterone in laboratory mice, though no tests have been conducted on humans yet.
Cordyceps – it is actually a fungus that lives on moth larvae. That’s probably the worst part about it, but there is some interesting animal research showing that this weird fungus increases testosterone levels in mice.
Basella Alba – studies have shown that this herb helps to boost testosterone levels in rats.
King Oyster – this is actually a mushroom that contains bioactive nutrition that contributes a little the production of certain hormones in the body. It may/may not contribute to the prevention of testosterone’s conversion to estrogen. Until more evidence arrives though, I just can’t be sure.
Perhaps the most commonly used aromatase-inhibitor in testosterone supplements, DIM is here to potentially decrease levels of estrogen. And, there’s actually a lot of studies that support this compound’s estrogen-lowering properties.
The problem? Well, they’re mostly done on women. So, despite an overwhelming amount of scientific evidence, there’s very little that says it works for men, too.
Ginger – this spice has many uses, but the most common for supplements is to reduce nausea. Specifically for testosterone, it does have a few studies in its belt but these studies also have significant limitations.
Bryonia Laciniosa – this herb has been used for years as an aphrodisiac and fertility cure. The potential to boost testosterone is there but, again, research is currently very limited.
Testosterone Booster Ingredients – What Doesn’t?
To be honest, saying Tribulus Terrestris doesn’t work is a bit of a stretch because, as research suggests, it probably does. However, it only seems to work as a testosterone booster for older men or men with low pre-existing levels of testosterone. In young and healthy males though? it’s pretty much placebo.
Regardless if this herb works as a T booster, however, it still is pretty good for libido which is why you’ll see a lot of testosterone booster supplements use it in their formulas.
Horny Goat Weed – used in some cultures to help decrease erectile dysfunction, there are no current studies in Western science to support claims that it increases testosterone production. It still shows up in T-booster stacks because it WILL make you feel manly as eff, even if it is not raising T.
Maca – this is a vegetable that is part of the broccoli family grown in Peru. It has long been used as an aphrodisiac, though it doesn’t work with other hormones.
Velvet Antler – generally derived from deer antlers, its use comes from ancient Chinese medical practices. It doesn’t appear to affect hormone production in humans.
Holy Basil – is considered to be an enhancer for libido. It may produce important nutrients that are responsible for overcoming infertility.
Butea Superba – this herb is touted as being effective in boosting testosterone levels in the body, but no research can support these claims.
Paederia Foetida – this was originally used for male vitality, but it is rarely studied because it has been deemed relatively unimportant for testosterone production.

There you have it. These are some of the many testosterone booster ingredients out there, popularly used in supplements. Some work, some don’t… but there sure are a lot to choose from. I mean, seriously – just search “testosterone” on Amazon and you’ll get THOUSANDS of results.
So, before you leave this article, I want to reiterate that, to me, the best testosterone booster supplements use safe and scientifically proven T-boosting ingredients. I’m a bit of a purist, you see. However, there are actually products that aren’t made up solely of test boosters but come out great – splendid, even.
That being said, I think the most important takeaway here is that YOU figure out what’s best for you. Learn to weigh the pros and cons of testosterone supplements and decide whether a certain product is what you want or need.
